Flu Shot Complications

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Patsy_Hamilton] Patsy Hamilton The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, commonly referred to as the CDC, advises that the best way to lower your chances of getting the flu is to get an annual flu shot. Complications and allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations are considered rare and worth the risk for some people, particularly elderly people who live in nursing home situations. Allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations can be caused by any of the ingredients in the shot, but most often occur in people who are allergic to eggs. The shot contains dead influenza viruses that were grown in chicken eggs. It is believed, at least by the CDC, that most flu shot complications occur in people who have an allergy to chicken eggs. The CDC advises that the signs of allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations can include breathing problems, hoarseness or wheezing, hives, paleness, weakness, accelerated heartbeat, or dizziness and if they occur, it will be within the first few hours following the flu shot. Complications, other than the common side effects (redness or swelling at the injection site, low grade fever and body aches), should be reported to a doctor right away and the doctor should file a Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System form. A severe allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations can be life threatening and anyone who has had an allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations in the past should consult a doctor before taking the annual flu shot. Those people who are allergic to mercury or thimerosal may have an allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations. Thimerosal is used in the manufacturing process of all flu vaccines and is used as a preservative in most. While the CDC states that there is no convincing evidence that thimerosal can cause severe flu shot complications, many doctors and researchers believe that mercury presence in flu shots can lead to autism and Alzheimers. The evidence concerning the link between mercury in flu shots and autism was convincing enough for New York state to ban vaccines containing thimerosal that are intended for use in pregnant women and children. But, even those flu shots which are labeled preservative free still contain trace amounts of mercury. It is generally not believed that these trace amounts can cause flu shot complications. One of the flu shot complications that occurs rarely is a condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome. It is not considered an allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations, but it may be associated with them. Guillain-Barre syndrome symptoms include fever and muscle weakness and sometimes results in paralysis and permanent nerve damage. The CDC advises that anyone who has had Guillain-Barre syndrome in the past, regardless of whether it was linked to flu shot complications, should consult their doctor before taking the annual vaccine. Because severe [http://www.immune-system-booster-guide.com] allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations are rare, the CDC believes that the benefits associated with the vaccine outweigh the risks associated with possible flu shot complications. The vaccine is considered to be 70-90% effective in preventing influenza in healthy persons under 65, 30-70% effective in preventing hospitalization due to influenza in elderly persons living outside of nursing homes, 50-60% effective in preventing hospitalization from influenza in elderly nursing home residents and 80% effective in preventing death from influenza in elderly nursing home residents. In Virginia, Can You Get Lifetime Workers’ Compensation Due to a Work Place Injury?

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Jerry Lutkenhaus In Virginia, the normal work place injury claim only allows you 500 weeks of compensation. Of course, in order to be paid this 500 weeks of compensation, you either have to show you are “totally disabled” or that you are “partially disabled” and cannot get a light duty job due to your “partial disability.” But what happens when you are still “totally disabled” and the 500 weeks expires? Virginia does allow some cases to go for payment of compensation for your lifetime. These fall into two areas. First, if your accident has caused an injury to the brain so severe as to render you unemployable, then you can receive lifetime compensation. Second, if your accident has caused the loss of both eyes, both legs, both arms, both hands, or any combination of two of the above, then you can receive lifetime compensation. The Virginia Workers’ Compensation has decided the injured worker does not have to show total loss of two members. It suffices to show a permanent ratable loss of use of two members and proof that the injured members cannot be used “gainfully” in employment. Thus, if one can show the work place accident caused a back injury which was so severe that it caused a permanent loss of use both legs, then one has a chance of obtaining lifetime compensation. This is an area that is fruitful for claims and litigation since back injuries are a very common type of injury. A doctor would have to be of the opinion that under the AMA Guide to Permanent Impairments the injured worker has suffered a ratable loss of each leg due to the work place injury. There is no bright line test regarding how high the rating has to be; however, the higher the rating the better chance the injured worker has to obtain lifetime compensation. For example, a back injury that caused more than a 40% loss of the use of both legs could stand a fair chance if there also was a good opinion that the injured worker’s legs due to this loss could not be used in “gainful employment.” Of course, since the worker is asking for lifetime compensation, the workers’ compensation insurance company will often fight these cases very vigorously. As a result, it often can come down to a battle of experts regarding (1) whether the back injury has caused a loss of use of the worker’s legs; (2) what is the proper permanent ratable loss of the worker’s legs; and (3) whether there is or is not some work the worker could do involving his injured legs (or arms). The Virginia Workers’ Compensation will conduct a hearing and render a decision. If either party is unhappy with the result, then that decision can be appealed from the Hearing Deputy Commissioner to the Three Commissioners who run the Commission. Finally, after the Three Commissioners have made their ruling there is a further appeal to the Virginia Court of Appeals. In my experience, there is a chance to win this type of case but it does entail having a very severe injury. Dating Advice For Women: Know When To Hold ‘em And When To Fold ‘em

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Tonja Weimer Dear Tonja, I need some dating advice. I am a 57-year-old woman and the guy I am seeing is 60. He just got out of divorce number four. He is wealthy and has moved a 35-year-old into his house as his girlfriend. I live in another city and he says he wants both of us in his life. He is older than her mother or her father. Is there something wrong with him? Signed,Terribly Hurt Dear Hurt, You are not alone in your pain. As improbable as it sounds, we can all find ourselves in this same predicament. We can get cornered and think we have few or no choices. We think there is only one job or one school or one house for us. In your case…it’s this one man. You can’t see your options or your opportunities and therefore, look to see what is wrong with him, as if he would or could change his behavior for you. Let’s look at what you are saying: Denial You think you are in love with a man who has another much younger woman living with him? First, your relationship is not mutual. If you accept this arrangement, you are acting more like a mother to him than as an equal. And why would you want to be with someone who treats you so badly? Deception Obviously, this man has been deceiving you, to string you along as if you matter to him and then to live with someone else. You are deceiving yourself if you think he can care about you in any deep abiding way. What is it you want from him? Do you look for a committed relationship with him when he shows you he cannot give you loyalty and exclusiveness? Self-worth Your relationship with yourself is what I call D.A.R.C. This is an acronym for the following: *Deserving. You are acting like you don’t deserve a great love in your life who loves you back. You deserve someone wonderful. You deserve a man you are attracted to who shares your values, and who is loyal, tender, kind, and accomplished. If you do not feel you deserve such a man, look for a counselor or a coach. *Age. Women are sensitive about age. We are acutely aware that men can and often do choose younger women for mates. However, not ALL men choose someone younger, and for those men who are only looking for youth, you don’t want them. Breeze on by this type of person. Focus on what you can do, on whom you can find, and let go of what is never going to be. *Role Models. Somewhere, you absorbed a role model and a belief that says men are in charge of your life and your happiness. The reality is, you can be in charge of your destiny if you shift this thought. *Choices. If you felt you had more choices in men, would you want this man in your life? When we shrink our life down to zero possibilities, we obsess over trying to make something work with someone unsuitable. A perceived lack of choices can make you hold on. Why cling to a relationship that makes you feel bad when there is a world of opportunity waiting for you? You can’t get boxed into a corner thinking you only have one hand to play. As the old song goes…”You gotta know when to hold ‘em, and know when to fold ‘em…” You can do it. Personalize Your Vows: Add a Funny Wedding Vow

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Robert Bailey This event is the beginning of your new lives together. You will want the ceremony and your wedding vows to reflect both your individual personalities and your love for each other. Why Write Your Own Vows? Why do couples decide to write their own wedding vows? There are many reasons, but usually it is because they are creative individuals who are tired of the standard vows. They want their words to be personal and to express exactly how they feel. Some prefer to spice up their vows a bit or add a funny wedding vow. Others find that only the two of them can express their true feelings and intentions in uniting with each other. They may find that traditional vows do not allow them to express themselves freely. Remembering the Humor: Funny Wedding Vows Writing your wedding vows should not be a chore or something you dread doing. It should be fun! One thing you need to keep in mind both for your wedding and then for the marriage to come afterwards is your sense of humor. Every successful couple understands the importance of humor in relationship. Sometimes you just can’t take things too seriously or the stress will destroy you. The same thing applies to writing your wedding vows. Be sure you remember your sense of humor and remember what it is that drew the two of you together to begin with. There is no rule that says your vows have to be boring or lackluster. Your vows should reflect your personality. This is a good point to remember that it’s okay to be funny in your wedding vows. Yes, this is a serious event and you want to be taken seriously. But a little humor is okay, especially if it comes naturally and if you are a bit of a jokester anyway. You certainly don’t want to treat your wedding ceremony as if it’s comedy night at the club or bust out with those funny internet jokes you got in your email yesterday. However, some properly placed humor is a really good thing. Examples of Funny Wedding Vows Funny wedding vows like, “I promise to share the remote and to put the toilet seat down” might sound kind of funny now but will not likely be a hit at the actual wedding. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t find some funny wedding vows that fit you two as a couple. “I promise to always make your favorite banana milkshake,” or “I vow to split the difference on the thermostat” are some more examples of funny wedding vows we’ve found. You can have a lot of fun thinking up your own- whether they end up in your vows or not. Robert Bailey is the webmaster of WeddingVowMastery.com, a website dedicated to personalized and funny wedding vows. Along with Lisa Mason, he is also the co-author of Wedding Vow Mastery: The E-book. The Successful Career Woman’s Guide to Landing and Keeping a Man!

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Mary Gardner Many, many women I know are self sufficient, successful and capable. They spent many years getting a degree or advanced degree and are now in a very successful and rewarding career. Theyve bought houses, gone on trips and own businesses, theyre beautiful and are amazing human beings.. but they have no idea why they cant get a man to stay!!! Im not talking about the women who dont WANT a man in their life. Theyve been there and done it! Im talking about the woman who WANTS a man, a companion and a friend to share their life with. And I dont mean a gay man! Many of these women are teaching in universities, running businesses or partners in a law firm. Theyre content on the outside, but very much would like to have a man at their side. Theyll NEVER admit it to anyone, because theyre often teased about being single and are always showing up to events with friends and not a companion. Theyre tough on the outside, because theyve had to be. But when they get together with their closest friends, or their coach, they confide in each other and this is what theyve shared: They dont NEED A man.. but they WANT one. Ive learned so many amazing things from being around these women. They are truly incredibly self sufficient and can run their house better than most women I know. But there is one thing they lack and its what I have taught them: Warmth with people and of course.. the all important FLIRTING SKILLS!!! Now before you go and stop reading because I went and wrote something so incredibly basic, let me ask you this: *When did you last make the person you were talking with, feel good about themselves? *When was the last time you let the person you were talking to, know that they were needed? *When was the last time that the person who was talking to you, walked away with a smile on their face? If the answer to any of these questions was I dont remember then that was TOO long ago! If the answer was just yesterday.. then youre doing a good job! Todays world is so busy, that we rush through life just trying to squeeze all of the necessary things in. Often times we dont give the actual people we come in contact with a second look, let alone a thought. When Im working with the people who want to develop warmth in their life the first thing I do is to send them out with a different set of eyes. When they go to the store, their ASSIGNMENT is to greet the people behind the meat counter or cash register and make THEM feel special. How is a person supposed to do THAT you ask? Two days ago, I decided to make Cuban Sandwiches for lunch. So, I went to the 17 year old boy behind the counter and started asking for his recommendations for meat, for condiments, and for cheese. Before you knew it, he was telling me OTHER dishes he wanted to make or had made recently. We were having a terrific conversation and when I left, I told him this: I can guarantee that youre going to make a great husband! When I left, I knew he felt great.. and I did too. Practicing in low risk situation is always the best. So when youre in that situation of really wanting to show a person of the opposite sex that youd like to get to know them BETTER, then youll have LOTS of practice of making a person feel special. Okay, yes, flirting does also involve dressing up a bit, using the long linger of the eyes, glancing sideways at the person you admire and quickly away with a smile, and all of those little things that we can do when we like someone. To some people, these come naturally, but to others, they have to learn them all again. Other suggestions for the ALL IMPORTANT flirting are to briefly touch the man on his arm, laugh at all of his jokes, and keep your body very casual, not so professional, stiff and unrelaxed. Hell REALLY get the drift if you say something like, oh my gosh.. youre so silly while you laugh with him and give him a little push on the arm just for good measure! But the best one is to really make a person feel special and NEEDED. If youre incredibly self sufficient then GREAT. But dont let your being a complete human without a man side of you forget that MEN NEED TO BE NEEDED. They want to feel and BE special to that special woman, and they want to know that to the outside world, youre competent, successful and beautiful but at home? All you need is HIM! Mary Gardner is a communications consultant and coach. She’s coached dozens and dozens of women on this topic alone and has spoken nationally about dating and relationships. She enjoys being able to teach powerful women the basic skill of flirting… is able to break it down so it’s easy to learn. Donate Your Old Cellular Phone To Support A Worthy Cause

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tim_Gorman]Tim Gorman With new features being added to cellular phones at an incredible rate, you may be considering upgrading your phone to a newer model. If you want to use your phone to send e-mail, take pictures, play games, or access the Internet, a new cellular phone can be an appealing option. As an added benefit, you can also donate your old phone to one of several worthy causes. Charitable organizations that serve abused women are in desperate need of old cellular phones. The phones are refurbished and given to victims of domestic violence to provide emergency access to potentially lifesaving services. Call to Protect and Verizon Wireless HopeLine are two examples of charitable organizations that will accept unwanted cellular phones for this purpose. Unlike many other charitable organizations, Call to Protect will even accept a non-working cellular phone. Many schools and community groups participate in PhoneRaiser, a unique fundraising program that allows participants to collect old cellular phones and donate the proceeds to a charity of their choice. PhoneRaising is sponsored by the CTIA Wireless Foundation, the wireless industrys philanthropic organization. Goodwill is another possible option for people looking to donate their old cellular phones. However, Goodwill will only accept phones that meet certain technology and age requirements. Proceeds earned from the sale of old cellular phones support Goodwills job training and employment programs. If you decide to donate your unwanted cellular phone to a worthy cause, remember to deactivate your service before donating the phone. For tax purposes, its also a good idea to get a receipt if youre donating your cellular phone to a 501(c)3 organization. Millions of older but still usable cellular phones are dumped in landfills across the country each year by consumers craving the latest technology. Donating your unwanted cellular phone to a worthy charitable organization is the environmentally-friendly solution if youre looking to upgrade your phone. By The Rocket’s Red Glare: What Fireworks Displays Can Teach Us About Tradeshows

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Susan Friedmann Firework displays are a traditional part of summertime celebrations. There’s something about them — the noise, the color, the pyrotechnic glory — that resonates with crowds. According to some experts, fireworks as we know them got started in the 10th century. That means that this basic technology has been wowing spectators for a very, very long time. Yet when I attended a recent fireworks display, I overheard a woman saying this: “I don’t know how they do it. Every year it’s the same thing, but they keep making it better somehow.” Wouldn’t every exhibitor love to hear that about their booth? It appears that the fireworks companies have mastered what trade show exhibitors often struggle with: presenting the same products and services in a way that’s new and exciting. What can tradeshow exhibitors learn from the pyrotechnic pros? The answers might surprise you. You can do a lot in a very limited time Fireworks are not an everyday event. Most people will see only one to two fireworks shows a year, if that many. Performances are measured in minutes, not hours. The vast majority of shows — industry estimates range close to 70%! — are scheduled in a two week period in the middle of the summer. Yet, even in this small window of opportunity exists the potential for profitability. There are more than a few decent sized fireworks companies out there, vying to show what a good show they can produce. Most of these companies earn the lion’s share of their annual revenue during those hectic fourteen days. These companies know that it is make it or break it time, so they pull out all of the stops. Extensive preparation is done. Things are practiced until they’re perfect. When it’s showtime, every team member does their best to ensure a flawless show. Consider applying that mentality to your tradeshow participation. How would you approach exhibiting if you knew this was your only chance to market all year long? What if 70% of your sales had to come from trade show leads? What changes would you make? How would you train your people? Know what your audience wants Knowing what your target audience expects and desires from you is crucial. The fireworks industry caters to an audience that has certain expectations of a fireworks display: loud noise, bright colors, technical brilliance that also has an insatiable appetite for something new. They’re responded by adding new elements to the existing show: new colors, for example, or shows synchronized with music. The essential product has not changed, but it has been augmented and improved. Tradeshow attendees have certain expectations of your booth, but they also want something new. How can you add to or improve your products, services, or presentation thereof to generate additional excitement around your display? Understand that Audiences Change The customers you have today are not the customers you had yesterday — and they’re definitely not the customers you’ll have tomorrow. Sometimes the changes that occur in your target audience have nothing to do with your products and services and everything to do with a seemingly unrelated product. For example: advances in high-definition televisions have dramatically impacted the fireworks industry. Forty years ago, no one was watching fireworks on television. Now, increasing numbers of people are, as high-definition televisions allow people to experience the beauty of the show without the bugs, crowds, noise, or traffic. Firework companies have responded by creating brighter fireworks that deploy at a lower height, easier for the television cameras to capture. By working to meet the changing needs of their target audience, fireworks companies are striving to remain relevant and entertaining, rather than becoming a reminder of “what people used to do on the 4th of July”. How is your target audience changing? What recent developments have changed how they view, use, and purchase your products and services? Is this reflected in your marketing plan? Connect with the media In addition to the television broadcasts, fireworks companies have been surprisingly savvy about working with the media to promote their shows. From simulcasting the show’s music over local radio stations (broadening the appeal to those viewers who are not at the point of launch) to blogs detailing the work that goes into a show to giving local media ‘behinds the scenes’ peeks at the show in progress, there’s a constant effort to keep their name and company image in the public eye before, during, and after the actual show. Apply this to your tradeshow participation. What are you doing to let attendees know they should visit your display? What are your media outreach efforts during the show? Does you stop sending press releases when the show lights go off? Fireworks and tradeshows have some interesting points of comparability. With proper planning, promotion, and performance, pyrotechnic experts and tradeshow exhibitors can both get a lot of bang for their buck! Written by Susan A. Keeping the Devil at Bay

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Bruce Burnett Neyther falling sickness, neyther devyll, wyll infest or hurt one in that place where a bay tree is, wrote Thomas Lupton in 1575, referring to the putative ability of the bay laurel to offer protection from misfortune. The Roman emperor, Tiberius (42 BC 37 AD), would always take refuge under his bed wearing a crown of bay leaves during a thunderstorm as he was convinced this would protect him from the thunder and lightning. The death of a bay tree was also historically regarded as a portent of evil or pending disaster. In Richard II, Shakespeare wrote: Tis thought the king is dead; we will not stay. The bay trees in our country are all witherd. In mythology, bay leaves were worn as an amulet to ward off evil and were burned and scattered as a strewing herb in exorcism and purification rituals. Leaves placed under a pillow are supposed to induce inspiration and prophetic dreams. One old legend maintains that if a wish is written on a bay leaf, which is then burned, the wish will come true. In Greek mythology, Apollo the sun god fell in love with Daphne who had been pierced by one of Cupids darts causing her to dislike Apollo. She spurned his advances and Daphnes father, Peneus, changed her into a bay tree to help her escape. Apollo knelt before the tree and declared it forever sacred. Henceforth he wore a crown of laurel leaves on his head in remembrance of his unrequited passion for Daphne. From this myth, somewhat curiously, the bay came to symbolize glory and honor. The ancient Greeks crowned Olympic winners, scholars and poets with bay wreaths and they are still today placed on Boston Marathon winners. In the garden the bay tree is a tender perennial and extended freezing temperatures will kill it. Although the bay will grow to 20 meters in its native Mediterranean habitat, in a temperate or cooler climate it is best grown in a pot where it can be moved to a protected area during the coldest months. Bay laurel is used medicinally primarily to treat upper digestive tract disorders, having a similar effect as spearmint. It is also used to ease muscular aches and pains. The following recipe for Laurel Bay Mint Bath will ease and relax tired muscles after a hard day: cup of dried mint leaves 1 cup of chopped bay leaves 1 tsp. Coconut oil 1 tsp. Almond extract. Toss all the ingredients in a mixing bowl then place in a piece of cheesecloth, one-foot square. Tie with string and submerge it under very hot running bath water. Allow the bath water to cool to a comfortable temperature while the bouquet infuses. Relax in the bath for at least 30 minutes, adding warm water to maintain a comfortable temperature. Bay leaves are an effective insect repellant and can be placed in closets and drawers and even into a flour canister to deter weevils. Unlike most herbs, bay is stronger semi-fresh than completely dried, with its flavor and aroma peaking between three and seven days after picking. Bay contributes more aroma than flavor to food and differs again from most herbs by not losing its flavor with long cooking. Bay leaves should be removed from dishes before serving. A dinner guest will not remember your culinary skills if he or she gets a bay leaf stuck in their throat. Bouquet garni is de rigueur in French cuisine and bay leaves are de rigueur in bouquet garni. For convenience prepare your bouquet garni in bulk ahead of time so you have lots on hand. Following is a convenient recipe for this:Bouquet garni 12 whole bay leaves; 12 tsp. whole celery seeds; 24 whole cloves; 36 peppercorns; 12 Tbsp. dried parsley; 6 tsp. thyme. Divide all the ingredients equally on to 12, four-inch square pieces of cheesecloth. Tie with heavy white kitchen twine, leaving a long string for easy removal. The taste of bay is tangy and slightly peppery. It enhances the flavor of just about everything, but especially soups, stews and tomato-based dishes. Pot roasts and shellfish should almost never be served without bay. It will even improve the taste of custard sauces if the milk is scalded with one or two leaves.
